The Maritime Museum
Curaçao, which opened its doors in December 1998, is housed
in the monumental restored former Hotel Venezuela building opposite the
Floating Market in Scharloo.
The exterior of the mansion that dates back to 1729 was renovated in a
historical grand way, while the interior was turned into a light modern
exhibition area in maritime style complete with a gangplank, portholes and
ship railings, all in wood and brass.
Shipping has always played a crucial part in the Caribbean: from the
discovery voyages of Christopher Columbus to modern day cruise travel and
container shipping. The museum pays tribute to Curaçao’s rich maritime
history through the ages covering a period of over 500 years.
Exhibits include antique miniatures, 17th century ship models, nautical
equipments, and authentic nautical charts & maps - some dating from the
1500's. Other highlights include representations of Spanish rule, the
conquest of Curaçao by the Dutch and formation of the Dutch West India
Company, the evolution of Willemstad as a naval base and maritime trading
center, its explosive 20th century development, and a projection of what is
in store for the city in the new millennium.
Video presentations and multi-media displays are used throughout the museum
to bring Curaçao's maritime history to life.
The Maritime Museum features harbor tours twice a week and a gift shop with
interesting souvenirs.
